John Williams
Owner & Winemaker @Frog's Leap
John Williams was raised in western New York and spent the summers on his grandparents’ dairy farm. Following high school, he attended Cornell University where he planned to study fermentation sciences to pursue a career in the dairy industry. After receiving his degree from Cornell University in 1975, John was accepted into the Enology and Viticulture Master’s Program at UC-Davis. Following a winemaking stint at Spring Mountain Vineyards in the Napa Valley, in 1981 he co-founded Frog’s Leap winery with partner Larry Turley. He became the sole owner in 1994, moving the winery to the Rutherford Bench in the Napa Valley. John’s passion for protecting and preserving a healthy agricultural way of life led to the establishment of the Rutherford River Restoration Project and he and the winery team are recognized for their contributions to the organic farming movement, the promotion of alternative energy sources, and efforts to encourage sustainable business practices.
Violet Grgich
President @Grgich Hills Estate
Violet’s passion for wine began at an early age, as she literally grew up accompanying her father, Vintners Hall of Fame inductee Miljenko “Mike” Grgich, in the vineyards and cellar. She spent her summers at the winery, doing everything from bottling line work to laboratory analysis and working in the tasting room. Attending UC-Davis, Violet earned a BA in music while taking classes in biology, chemistry, and enology. After graduation, she returned home to Grgich Hills to continue her education in the wine business, learning about daily operations of the winery from her father. She received her Master of Music in harpsichord at Indiana University, and then joined the winery fulltime in 1988. She’s now responsible for daily management of the winery, as well as sales and marketing. She says that she has the ideal job: “I believe that wine is part of a healthy, happy and long life. Wine brings people together and makes them happy, which makes my job extraordinarily fulfilling.”
Jason Haas
Partner and General Manager @Tablas Creek Vineyard
Jason Haas is the second-generation proprietor of Tablas Creek, serving in the dual roles of Partner and General Manager. Son of Vineyard Brands founder (and Tablas Creek co-founder) Robert Haas, he grew up in the wine business, including spending two summers working at Château de Beaucastel. After obtaining a Master's Degree in Archaeology from Cornell and spending a stint managing a tech company, Jason moved to California to join Tablas Creek in 2002, where he oversees the business, winemaking, sales and marketing. In addition to his work at Tablas Creek, Jason is President of the Rhone Rangers board of directors, past Chairman of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, and a board member of Free the Grapes. In recognition of his contributions to the Paso Robles wine community, he was voted by his peers 2015 Paso Robles Wine Country Wine Industry Person of the Year and 2017 San Luis Obispo County Wine Industry Person of the Year.
